Exhibition time capsule of thoughts

- Maxine Jacobs maxine.jacobs@stuff.co.nz

A new exhibition is calling on Palmerstonians to answer 150 questions about themselves in a project working towards creating a snapshot of the city’s residents.

Toiwarbrick creatives Virginia and Warren warbrick opened 150 Patai, in Square Edge on Thursday. The display is a participatory exhibition seeking local perspectives for the five-month thoughtprovoking project aligning with Palmerston North’s 150-year anniversary.

Contributors are asked to draw a number from the poster board, read a question and write a short answer before submitting their card anonymously into a box below.

The first month of the exhibition includes basic questions that will evolve into deeper issues, leading to more abstract queries about how those who take part feel about themselves and their city, Virginia warbrick said.

‘‘We’ve tried to make it as easy as possible. They’re open, but not complicated.

‘‘We’ve come up with the first set of questions and are asking people to contribute to the next set of questions,’’ she said.

Warbrick described the project as a time capsule of thoughts as the city reaches its 150th year.

‘‘Every month the look of the display will change ... it will capture their attention again,’’ she said.

‘‘We’re encouraging people to do all 150.

‘‘We’re making parcels that people can pick up and answer them at home.’’

The warbricks are unsure where the project will lead, and are hoping to share the answers with other creatives such as writers, artists and dancers to inspire their work.

‘‘It’s like with any project, you have an idea about where it will go, but these things evolve.’’

The project is seeking a wide range of contributors, but given the exhibition is based in Square Edge, Warbrick was mindful that may limit those who come forward.

People can collect the cards from Square Edge, send messages on facebook, or write their answers in person across the course of the month, Warbrick said.
