Chopper rider back on bike for Relay
A Bunch of Wallys are addicted to the Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
In their trademark red and white T-shirts, hats and glasses, they will be celebrating 21 years of the Relay at the 21st anniversary of the Cancer Society’s Manawatu¯ event at the end of this month.
And next weekend, team leader David Leishman will be back on the Chopper bike his wife Karen has failed to give away, cycling non-stop for 21 hours in honour of 21 years as his fundraising contribution.
Leishman’s initial inspiration for getting involved with Relay was in memory of his parents, Betty and Gilbert.
But the impact of cancer on the lives of people around him has never really stopped, rekindling the motivation.
He and team-mates, includingwife Karen, daughter Abby and friend Basil Dustin, have never stopped thoroughly enjoying the 24-hour community event of celebration, honour, support and hope. ‘‘It’s kind of addictive,’’ he said. Leishman has put his body through the wringer with his fundraising efforts.
One year, he walked the track for the full 24 hours, apart from toilet and sustenance breaks.
It was tough, and he decided never to do that again.
Then came the Chopper in 2004, a close replica of the 1970s model, with just three gears and small wheels – essentially a kids’ bike.
He decided to ride it for a lap around Lake Taupo¯ as part of the annual cycle challenge, and was delightedwith a contribution from the Chopper’s importers and a handshake from mountaineer Mark Inglis.
Another inspiration came along in the form of Urenui’s Old Town Hall Cafe´ & Tea Room owner Joanne Watson, who runs the place as a refuge for anyone despite her own hardships.
Leishman decided if she could do what she did, he could get back on the bike.
The 58-year-oldmaintenance engineer will do circuits over the Heara Kotahi bridge to Massey and back over the Fitzherbert Bridge starting at 3pm on Saturday, March 20.
People are welcome to cheer Leishman on and can contribute to his fundraising efforts at the team’s givealittle page.
