Singers descend on the city

- Janine Rankin

Palmerston North will be entertained by hundreds of voices singing in four-part harmonies in September when barbershop groups and choruses descend on the city.

The Manawatunes Chorus is hosting the national Power of Harmony convention at the Regent on Broadway, which will be followed by the 2021 Young Singers in Harmony competitions. The convention organisers have been granted $2775 from the city council-supported Creative Communities scheme, with the young singers groups getting $4248.85.

Manawatunes secretary Greg

Thomson said it was the first time the convention had been held in Palmerston North.

It was particularly special because it was the city’s 150th anniversary year, the

Manawatunes 25th birthday, and the first time singers had been able to compete in a while after Covid-19 restrictions saw cancellation of last year’s convention.

The young singers will take the stage at the Regent on Broadway on September 22 and 23, followed by the adult competitions on September 24 and 25.

The champions will perform for the public on the Thursday and Saturday.

The singers will also venture out of the theatre, with ‘‘AfterGlow’’ performances at venues around the city. There would be a ‘‘Big Sing’’ in Te Marae o Hine/ The Square at some stage.

Tickets will be available closer to the time.
