Support for concert appreciated

-

The Manawatu¯ Mayday Coalition, which organises the Mayday concert on behalf of Unions Manawatu¯, wishes to thank Palmerston North mayor Grant Smith and the city council’s arts funding committee chairwoman, Rachel Bowen, for their intervention in providing funding from the mayoral relief fund after our funding application had been rejected by the committee on a technicality.

That funding will go towards supporting our concert. Thosewho attend our concert this year have been asked to make a donation of $5 each, alongside their $5 ticket at the door. That donation will go towards the Myanmar pro-democracy movement who are involved in a struggle for their very existence.

There is a large group of myanmar refugees living in Palmerston North who will be very grateful for the support our concert raises for their brothers and sisters back in Myanmar.

Unions Manawatu¯ has organised many joint activities over the years with the PNCC, such as hosting the Myanmar Young Leaders group when they visit the city each year to learn about how democracy works, and we look forward to continuing that good relationshipwith the council into the future.

Our Mayday concert is a celebration of International Workers’ Day and is on Saturday, May 1, at 7pm at the Globe Theatre.
