Australianpmto visit NZ in coming month
Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne met with New Zealand Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta in Wellington on Wednesday, and confirmed that Morrison would be travelling to New Zealand. Payne said her trip, so soon after the opening of the trans-tasman bubble, was an opportunity ‘‘to see friends again’’ and it would ‘‘bear great fruit in advance of our leaders meetings, later next month’’. The office of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern would not confirmthe details of Morrison’s visit when contacted yesterday. Over in Australia, the Sydneymorning Herald has reported Morrison will make the trip in two weeks’ time. The report also quoted anonymous Australian officials who said they were surprised by Mahuta’s speech onmonday, particularly her comments afterward about New Zealand telling its Five Eyes partners it was ‘‘uncomfortable’’ with any expansion of the intelligence-sharing arrangement’s remit.
