Anger over politics in Auschwitz appointment
Three custodians of Auschwitz-birkenau have resigned in protest at the ‘‘politicisation’’ of the former Nazi death camp, after Poland appointed a former prime minister to its advisory council. Critics have reacted furiously to the announcement that Beata Szydlo has been installed on the body that safeguards the memorial site where 1.1 million people, most of them Jews, were murdered by occupying Nazi forces. Szydlo, 58, is amember of the European Parliament for the ruling Right-wing Lawand Justice party (PIS). The Auschwitz council had previously consisted mainly of academics.
