Govt narrows inquiry into abuse in care
The Government has narrowed the scope of the Royal Commission into Abuse in Care, while giving the long-running commission another five months to complete its final report. RNZ reported yesterday that the royal commission, the largest ever conducted in Newzealand, had asked for three emergency funding boosts as it have blown a $56 million budget meant to last two years. Minister of Internal Affairs Jan Tinetti said yesterday that the Government had removed a requirement that the royal commission inspect modern day care, so that it could complete its job by 2023. ‘‘Since the royal commissionwas established, there have been a number of reviews and investigations into contemporary state care issues, which have significant overlaps and risk duplication with the royal commission’s work.’’the royal commission would nowbe given until June 2023 to report back to the Government.
