Superstocks fight out three titles in finals

- By Tony Coffin

As usual, the final night of the 2020–2021 racing season at the Robertson Holden Speedway will see the points titles for each class up for grabs with virtually all of them wide open for the taking.

Racing at the fantastic new Palmerston North venue will begin at 5pm, the same time as the last few weeks’ racing.

After a disruptive beginning to the season when there were many rainouts, it has been in full flow since late November with hardly a meeting postponed.

One of the few was the first night of the Peter Barry Memorial Derby Teams Championship that resulted in the finals being decided a fortnight ago when the Grid Bombers became one of the very few teams to defend their title, behind the much vaunted Dad’s Army from New Plymouth who won four consecutive titles in the early part of last decade.

The title was initially handed to Shake N Bake but their lead driver hadn’t completed enough laps and was well behind the lead Grid Bombers car.

The superstock class, along with the season-long Points Title, will run multiple titles with the King of the Arena Best Pairs as well as the final of the Lucas Oils Superstock Series, keeping drivers and fans on their toes as the permutations are continually calculated during the night.

At present Jordan Dare leads the points race with 40 points, followed by a group of out-oftown drivers.

Gisborne pair Janie Hamilton and Ethan Rees are level on 34 points, with Kihikihi driver Benji Sneddon two points further back on 32.

Dare’s Palmerston North Panthers team-mate William Humphries is the next best on 31 points, followed by another

Gisborne driver, the popular Peters Rees (27 points), Scott Joblin (24 points), Kihikihi’s Asher Rees (20 points) and Christchurch’s Jayden Ward (17 points).

In a disrupted season at the Robertson Holden Speedway with early season cancellations and titles being decided at other tracks around the country, drivers have been able to collect points at two or at most three meetings.

With race points counting for double on the final night, any of the top 10 drivers are still in the hunt, particularly if Dare and those at the top have a bad night.

After the Palmerston North Panthers dismal semifinal effort against the Christchurch Glen Eagles at February’s ENZED Teams’ Champs at the Robertson Holden speedway, when they were dismantled, the Panthers turned it all around at the teams nationals at Auckland’s Waikaraka Park last weekend to take the title in an impressive display.

With Luke Miers out for the season, having been injured at the Stockcar Teams National
