Junta lays new charges of corruption against Suu Kyi

-

Aung San Suu Kyi faces 15 years in jail after the junta that toppled her elected government in Myanmar brought newcharges against her days before she is due to stand trial. The new accusations, that she underpaid rent for a charitable office and gardening college, follows a claim by the national anti-corruption commission that Suu Kyi, 75, abused her authority as national leader to get favourable terms for a foundation that she headed. Her trial will begin on Monday in the capital, Naypyidaw, where she has been held under house arrest since the coup in February. Among the charges already brought against her are breaking the Official Secrets Act, spreading information that could cause public alarm, and violating Covid-19 pandemic restrictions.
