US envoys develop illness similar to cases in Cuba
Two dozen American spies, diplomats and officials in Vienna have developed unexplained illnesses resembling Havana syndrome, a mysterious neurological condition first found in staff at the United States embassy in Cuba in 2016. Over the past five years the US has investigated at least 150 reported cases of staff working overseas falling sick with symptoms such as memory loss, hearing problems and nausea. A leading theory among US security authorities is that the illnesses result from Russian ‘‘attacks’’, possibly using concentrated beams of microwave radiation.
