Pieces fall into place for Jets

It’s been a busy week schooling up on plays as three of the Manawatū Jets’ big four have arrived in town and should be available to play this weekend.

The Jets host the Canterbury Rams at Fly Palmy Arena tomorrow night and should be close to full strength finally after two games without a full squad.

After arriving in New Zealand, Kiwi forward Shane Temara, who has been playing in Norway, and United States power forward Zane Najdawi have both had their international clearance confirmed, while it was hoped United States shooting guard Rob Crawford would have his clearance sorted by game day.

A third import, who is yet to be announced, was en route to New Zealand and should be available to play next week. He may arrive in time to see the game tomorrow.

Jets coach Natu Taufale said the trio would make a big difference.

‘‘They have been training with us all week. I’m pleased to say they have transitioned well and integrated well into our group.

‘‘It’s really positive the contribution they can make to our group. They bolster our size and experience all three being here.

‘‘It’s a welcome relief for our younger guys and that’s helped us in a big way.’’

Taufale said it had taken time for the new players to get used to their systems, but they had caught on quickly. ‘‘It will be really interesting to get close to our full complement for me and my coaching staff. Now we can see what our potential is and what we can do.’’

The Jets’ young charges have been doing the job in the others’ absence and have performed admirably, despite losing the first two games.

They have lost 78-57 to the Taranaki Mountain Airs and 97-78 to the Southland Sharks in the first two weeks. They lacked firepower, especially against the Sharks, but produced two gutsy performances.

Taufale expected Canterbury, who have a strong guard lineup including Tall Blacks Taylor Britt and Joe Cook-Green, to be tough opposition, and be a good challenge for the Jets’ guards.

Having forwards Temara and Najdawi, while Crawford is also tall, will give the Jets more presence with some bigger men.

‘‘We’re really buoyed by what Shane and Zane offer us and [have] really good strength inside.’’

The game is at Fly Palmy Arena again and Taufale hoped to get a big crowd in.

Tipoff is at 7.30pm.
