Climate activists block entrance to transfer station

A group of climate activists have gathered outside the Petroleum Transfer Station inWiri, south Auckland, blocking the entrance with their protest. Members of the global environmen­tal movement Extinction Rebellion closed down the Roscommon Rd station as part of their ‘‘Just Stop Oil’’ campaign. Caril Cowan, spokespers­on for Extinction Rebellion Tāmaki Makaurau, said the government had ‘‘failed in its promise’’ to allow no newpermits for oil exploratio­n. ‘‘We are blocking theWiri station to showwe need to radically reduce our dependence on fossil fuels,’’ she said. ‘‘There can be nomore oil or gas exploratio­n in New Zealand and the world, effective immediatel­y.’’ A police spokespers­on said police were aware of the gathering.
