All the favourites return for derby

The 2019 final between the Grid Bombers and Munta Motorsport would have to have been one of the outstandin­g Peter Barry Derby Teams racing finals, not just in derby racing but any form of teams racing as the two teams went out to destroy each other.

With first car past the finishing line winning the title, the lead swapped three times, with first the Grid Bombers then Munta Motorsport looking like they would win the race.

The block cars from each team did outstandin­g jobs to either hold up or take out the race leader.

By the race end, few in the crowd had any idea who was leading, as first the white flag signalling one lap to go was shown to a Grid Bombers driver before he was taken out.

It appeared Munta Motorsport­s Troy Honeyfield had hit the front, but ahead of him the chequered flag popped up for Ethan Goldsack to take the win for his team.

It was a second consecutiv­e final for the Bombers who had been beaten last year by New Plymouth team Dad’s Army.

The entertaini­ng Grid Bombers are back in 2022 and start as one of the favourites. As long as they can retain enough driveable cars they will again be tough to beat.

Ethan and Matthew Goldsack will be keys to their chances, but with the same team again including Eugene Robbemond, Jon Morrinson and Jason Pointon, the Grid Bombers aren’t short on experience.
