Phoenix defender retires
Wellington Phoenix defender Louis Fenton is walking away from football at 29, and is doing it on his own terms after a career beset by injuries. The club stalwart has announced his retirement after making 159 appearances in the A-League Men over 10 years – the fifth highest in Phoenix history. The seven-cap NewZealand international has shown resilience to bounce back from a long list of serious injuries, including a broken leg, a broken foot and multiple shoulder dislocations. However, Fenton said he was happy he could bowout on his own terms andwas excited to become a fan again. ‘‘Maybe 29 is young to be retiring but I feel like in my career I’ve been through a lot,’’ Fenton said.
