Nix eye record

- Andrew Voerman

Wellington Phoenix believe they are on track to set a record for the largest regular season A-League Women crowd when they host their first match at Sky Stadium on Sunday.

But whether they hit the goal of 10,000 fans they have set themselves in their attempt to make ‘‘herstory’’ is another matter, with their ticket prices easily the competition’s most expensive.

General manager David Dome said that ‘‘a couple of thousand’’ tickets had been sold for Sunday’s match against Melbourne City [kickoff 3pm].

‘‘We are targeting 10,000 . . . we are ticking along at the same level as the men’s first game, which was about eight and a half. We want to get closer to 10.

‘‘The ultimate target is to be the highest standalone crowd ever for an A-League Women game, but we want to push on and do better than that as well.’’

The mark to beat to set a new record for a standalone regular season match is 5159, while the mark to beat set a new record for a standalone match including finals is 6127.

Larger crowds have been recorded during double-headers with men’s matches, with 8599 noted as being in for the women’s match at a Melbourne Victory home game in 2019.

The Phoenix men have had crowds of 8235, 7089, 6135 and 5203 for their four home matches so far

?? ?? David Dome: ‘‘If you halve your ticket prices, you don’t double your crowd, I’ll tell you that.’’
