More Kāinga Ora houses for Feilding
Kāinga Ora has shared plans to provide more than 60 new state homes in Feilding to help accommodate some of the 105 people on the Ministry of Social Development’s waiting list in Manawatū.
But while its plans for a 20-home cluster in Port St East have caused community concern about the medium-density concentration of state housing in a developing residential area, most of the rest of its plans are for homes dotted around existing neighbourhoods.
Kāinga Ora/Homes and Communities regional director Graeme Broderick said one of the strategies for providing more homes was to make better use of the existing land the organisation already owned.
“Many old state homes were built on very large sections.
“We are looking to make better use of the land they are on by replacing some of these older homes with more warm, dry and modern ones.”
Sites being considered for such redevelopment included 32 and 34 Monmouth St - three homes, 16 and 18 McCorkindale St - six homes, and 4 Edinburgh St - two homes.
Broderick said planning for those sites was at an early stage and could change.
The other way of providing more homes was by working with private developers who managed the construction process, with Kāinga Ora taking ownership when they were finished.
That was the process being used in Port St East, where the deal was done and consents were issued before neighbouring residents were alerted.
Now, there are similar arrangements in place for 7 Fitzroy St - five homes, 36 Monckton St - three homes, and 11 Chamberlain St - four homes, and 17 Owen St - four homes.
“With 105 people on the Ministry of Social Development’s housing register in the Manawatū region, the new homes are great news for those who are in need of housing in Feilding,” Broderick said.
