Roadworks will close busy streets

- Janine Rankin

Palmerston North motorists are being encouraged to avoid two busy routes through the city as major roadworks are undertaken.

The first to start is the installation of right-turn arrows at the traffic lights on the intersection of College St and Botanical Rd.

It is a project Awapuni residents have been asking the city council to carry out over several rounds of submissions.

It had a budget of about $120,000. City council chief infrastructure officer Chris Dyhrberg said the work was starting on Monday to coincide with the beginning of the school holidays, with a goal to finish before the new term starts.

Each side of the intersection will be closed for a couple of days while contractors Fulton Hogan carry out the work. Boards will be in place to help with detours.

People heading to the Victoria Esplanade and Lido Aquatic Centre were advised to approach them from Cook St or the Fitzherbert Ave end of Park Rd, as access from Botanical Rd would be restricted.

The other work is on Railway Rd, along from Tremaine Ave and extending to the rail bridge, requiring road closures from Monday, April 22, for two months.

The job included rebuilding and upgrading the surface of the road so it was up to standard to continue being used by freight and heavy vehicles.

The full closure was to enable contractors to work as quickly as possible.

The works extended from the rail bridge to the main entrance of City Fitness gym.

While that entrance would be closed, people would still be able to use the secondary access to the gym.

The Francis Way intersection would be closed, but the Tremaine Ave intersection would not be affected. A temporary pedestrian crossing would be put in near Placemakers.
