Carterton locals try to guess who won $30m

- Stuff reporters

All the talk in Carterton yesterday morning was about who might have just won over $30 million.

The biggest Powerball first division prize of 2024 was won by someone from the small Wairarapa town on Saturday night, with a person purchasing the life-changing ticket online.

With around 6000 people living in Carterton, it might not be too difficult to find someone with an exceptionally wide smile on their face, out going for a Sunday stroll.

It was a hot topic of conversation at the Wild Oats Cafe in High Street North in Carterton, as customers tried to guess who the lucky winner might be, but apparently, there haven’t been any sightings of someone driving a Rolls Royce through the town yet.

If the new multimillionaire felt inclined to share their riches with the rest of Carterton, it would work that everyone would be $5000 richer, but so far nobody has been spotted handing out bundles of cash to locals.

The winning numbers were 11, 14, 20, 31, 33 and 36. The bonus ball number was 26 and the Powerball was 02.

The prize is made up of $30 million from Powerball First Division and $166,667 from Lotto First Division.

Saturday’s winner became the fourth Powerball multimillionaire this year and this win comes just a month after a couple from Dunedin scooped $12.3 million.

Although there was only one winner of the Powerball on Saturday night, five others picked up $166,667 each as First Division Lotto players.

These winning tickets were sold at Waimauku Minimart in Waimauku, Pacific Superette in Auckland, Pak N Save Ormiston in Auckland, and on MyLotto to two players from Waikato.
