Points titles, travel voucher there for the taking

- By Tony Coffin

There is always plenty of interest come the end of the season at the Robertson Prestige International Speedway with competitors out to finish the season on top in the overall points.

All those who finish top go into a draw with the winner taking the travel voucher up for grabs.

Even with double points, with the 20-point lead national sidecar champions Mike Zachan and Ben Franklin have, they still look almost impossible to head off.

Rob Miller and Jaxon Hannan are in second place with 40 points, then Wayne and Max Lett (36), and Matt Stewart and Nick Dunne (35).

Veterans John Hannan and Nigel Sturgeon (32) appear too far back, though if Zachan and Franklin are unable to race, there will be four teams within eight points of each other.

As they have all season, the minisprint class in wide open with any driver capable of winning, and the front-row starts often determining a race winner.

After losing his 2NZ title this season, Daniel Nickel (67 points) will be keen to keep his lead over the three races this Saturday night.

Chasing Nickel will be new 2NZ Nathan Jefferies just six points behind. Stratford’s Erin Uhlenberg (44) is next but in a big field with double points, any dropped points by those ahead will open the door for Uhlenberg, Glen McCutcheon (42) and Whanganui’s Dylan Smith (41).

The ministock classes are the most affected by grid positions, with those at the back having little chance of getting near the front with how even the drivers are.

Stratford’s Craig Mason (61 points) has edged out to a 10-point lead over Caleb Keane in the adult class. With Quin Clark 28 points behind, the title looks to be a decided between Mason and Keane.

The youth ministock class has been a treat to watch this season as the 12-14 year olds are as quick as their adult counterparts.

Harrison Cheetham had an outstanding season with a massive 95 points; by far the most in any class. Cheetham is one of a few drivers in the class able to get forward from well back in the field. Along with Kase William (87), their battle should be worth the watch.

Boston Joblin (69) has been quick recently and might be in the hunt if the top two get stuck in traffic or caught at the back of the field, with most drivers making the most of getting towards the front in the opening three laps before the field spreads out.

Lewis Ward (51), Ethan Macdonld (49) and Ashton Dorn are next.

Kaelin Mooney has made an instant impact on the superstock class since he stepped up from youth ministocks and the stockcar class, which he also competes in. Mooney’s consistency has him a narrow four points ahead of Brett Hyslop (37) who has been a revelation this season with his pace and consistency.

Jordan Dare (28), Wayne Hemi (26) who was injured recently and Jamie Hamilton (23) are all in the hunt for the points title.
