Kids throw themselves into fundraising efforts
After having their past two camps scuppered, pupils at a Palmerston North school were determined to ensure one happened this year.
Ross Intermediate School is sending its children on camp later this year – something it usually does every two years. In 2020, the camp was cancelled due to Covid-19 and in 2022, the school didn’t have the funds to send the children away. But this year, its students are going to El Rancho in Waikanae and they have to raise about $150,000 for everyone to attend.
Pupils Pippa Guerin and Scarlett Lees-Galloway, both 11, have taken on the job of promoting the school’s car boot sale fundraiser today, where the school is selling food and other items.
So far, about $23,000 has been raised through parent contributions, grants and community donations.
Both girls had initially been shocked at how much they had to raise, but said they would all try hard to get the money they needed.
“I [thought] well, we’re going to have to do a lot of fundraising,” Scarlett said.
Pippa recently went to the Hokowhitu market, where she handed out fliers advertising the car boot sale, while Scarlett has been around the classes at school, talking to other children about how they could help with the fundraiser.
Scarlett said there would be other fundraisers held later in the year.
This weekend, they’re selling items such as second-hand clothes and electronic equipment, jewellery and baked goods made by students and their families.
Members of the junior Lions Club had been involved in organising the baking.
The event is cash only and runs from 10am to 1pm.
