Changes on road to airport

- STAFF REPORTER

Motorists are being urged to factor in an extra five minutes when heading to Auckland Airport due to major road layout changes.

Citybound lanes on State Highway 20A around the Kirkbride Rd intersection were moved last Thursday as part of major roadworks.

Auckland Airport warned travellers about delays to traffic to and from the airport.

The new lanes are further west than the original lanes to make way for a trench to be dug under it and the southbound lanes where the motorway will eventually run.

The trench will eventually streamline motorway traffic to and from the airport, while allowing local traffic to remain above-ground.

The New Zealand Transport Agency says separating motorway traffic from local traffic at the Kirkbride intersection will reduce the high number of crashes in the area and make journey times to and from the airport more reliable.

It urges road users to drive with care and follow the signs to guide them through the different intersection layout and factor in an extra five minutes for their journeys.

The 580-metre trench is one of four transport programmes accelerated by the Government to help manage projected growth in Auckland’s population, employment and freight.
