Big finale awaits top teams

- ALAN APTED

Southern Cavaliers and Southern Souls are heading for a showdown in the Regional Premier Netball League.

They are the only unbeaten sides in division one of the league and won’t meet until the final and deciding round on August 12.

Both teams will have the contest on their minds heading into the second last round when Cavaliers, the defending champions, face the Mangere Hawks and Southern Souls front against Mellons Bay on Friday night.

Both are in imperious form heading for the finale with a differential of just four points separating them.

Cavaliers 50-40 win over former champions Manurewa Rugby Gold pushed their tally to 176 goals-for and 109-against while Southern feathered their tally of 203 goals-for and 140-against with a comprehensive 78-51 win over Mangere Hawks, their sister team from the Mangere-Otahuhu Netball Centre.

Both are tipped to win comfortably on Friday.

Although beaten by 10 points, Manurewa Rugby who face Aztec 1 on Friday will go into the match with their heads up. They out scored the champions 10-6 in the final quarter and intend to repro- duce that effort against Aztec who were easy 64-53 winners over Mellons Bay.

A similar battle is brewing in division two where Manurewa Rugby Black and Revelation Titans are for a title showdown.

Manurewa whipped Aztec 2 52-36 and Revelation Titans beat Conifer Grove Platinum 50-44 to keep their respective four game winning runs intact.

They too don’t meet until the final round.

Manurewa will be a little nervous when they face a competent Conifer Grove on Friday while the rivalry between the Titans and sister team, the Revelation Raiders, could throw a spanner in the works.

Division one matches start at 6.30pm. Division two matches start at 8pm.
