The importance of a regular mammogram

- SAMANTHA SMITH

Elaine Harvey is helping raise awareness around mammograms as she knows first hand how important they are.

The Papatoetoe resident was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2012, that was picked up in a regular mammogram appointment.

Harvey says she feels that being diagnosed early she was fortunate enough not to need any invasive treatment.

‘‘I had a mastectomy and reconstruction but was lucky enough not to need any chemotherapy or radiation.’’

The NZ Breast Cancer Foundation is challenging Kiwis to take action against breast cancer this October.

It is a great time for women to take action for their own health by booking a mammogram or checking their breasts for any changes.

‘‘Mammograms are very important, they pick up the cancers that can’t be felt such as ductal carcinoma in citu,’’ Harvey says.

‘‘They can only be picked up by a mammogram and confirmed by a biopsy. I think there should be more publicity around those cancers.’’

The money raised throughout October’s awareness and appeal month will support all areas of the foundations work.

This includes educating women about signs of breast cancer and how to check their breasts, and informing women over 40 about the importance of early detection through mammograms.

More than 3000 women and around 20 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and unfortunately more than 600 women will die.

Harvey helps out the foundation and supports other breast cancers patients in any way she can.

‘‘I help through driving for the Cancer Society or attending seminars for breast cancer, where attendees have a chance to share their experience and support others in decisionmaking,’’ she says.

Harvey says don’t ignore any worrying symptoms and if you have breast cancer don’t be alone.

‘‘The Cancer Society are there to assist. Also, if you’ve had breast surgery and have any questions don’t hesitate to contact them.’’
