When you need a helping hand
After 26 years in the funeral industry, Yvonne Graham is an experienced hand at a time when families need it most.
She started as the receptionist at an Otahuhu funeral company, and then bought the business off the previous owner. Eventually Yvonne moved and opened up as Papatoetoe Funeral Cottage.
For her first 12 years she was running the business on her own, arranging the funerals, driving the funeral cars, even doing the catering.
In an industry where many a business has gone by the wayside, Yvonne has remained a constant. She’s always been a familiar and friendly face in the local community. Starting out with Meals on Wheels, she has also provided funding for sports clubs, been a longtime member of Rotary and has also supported many local neighbourhood events.
When it comes to meeting with families, Yvonne rates the importance of just listening as vital, along with the art of bringing people together at a really tough time.
‘‘Families sometimes cannot decide how they want the funeral to go. Our skill is in bringing them together, getting those conversations going, and settling on what works for everyone.’’
She’s been joined in the business by fellow funeral director Deane Bullmore. Deane believes making the family the priority is key.
‘‘What families are looking for is a clear head to guide them through. And there’s nothing really that can’t be done. You can have the service at home, you can have it in a garden. Every family is different and we are there to give that guidance,’’ Deane says.
As well as helping with pre-arrangements and offering pre-payment trust plans, Papatoetoe Funeral Cottage can assist with all other aspects of funeral care, including international repatriations and co-ordinating monumental work.
Yvonne or Deane are happy to come to the home and discuss options and provide the information you need, at no obligation and no cost.
Papatoetoe Funeral Cottage is in a beautifully restored cottage at 34 Kolmar Road, Papatoetoe. Phone 279 9098.
