Do you have a flair for singing? Have you always dreamed of performing on stage? Would you like to be part of group of friendly, fun-loving women and go places?
SouthCity Soundz are an inclusive, all-female barbershop chorus that can help you discover an exciting new hobby and let your inner artist break free.
Based in South Auckland and celebrating their 25th birthday this year, the chorus are a vibrant and versatile group of women who love performing together.
The almost 20-member group sing under the directorship of Sheryl Willis and Cheryl Weijermars and are based at St John Evangelist School Hall,
Otara.
While Sheryl is experienced in teaching, speech language and dance, Cheryl comes from a classical music background and has obtained Grade 5 Singing through the Royal School of
Music.
The chorus is having an open night from 7pm on September 18. ‘‘We are open to women of all ages and singing abilities, and younger members are welcome,’’ Cheryl says.
‘‘SouthCity Soundz are committed to encouraging the love and harmony of barbershop singing. We offer a platform for members to enjoy, learn, perform and compete.’’
Those selected will get six free group-singing lessons, which will cover the basics of good singing technique, posture and breathing, phonation, articulation and resonance.
Members will receive support and one-on-one training from professional voice teachers, including top American artists from Sweet Adelines, the umbrella organisation of women’s barbershop singing.
The group practise every Monday in Otara and quartets can organise their training separately if they find it convenient.
‘‘We travel and compete nationwide,’’ says Cheryl.
‘‘Currently we are the smallest barbershop group in the country and are looking to grow.’’
Membership in SouthCity Soundz is also an excellent way of giving back to the community.
The group sing at rest homes and at charitable events like the Attainable Trust Disabled Christmas party, Southmall Santa Parade and other community events.
