Professional training options – massage and Chinese medicine
The New Zealand College of Chinese Medicine offers both the Level 5 NZ Diploma in Wellness and Relaxation Massage and the Level 6 NZ Diploma in Remedial Massage nationally by blended learning (Distance learning and Block courses).
The College has successfully offered the Level 5 NZ Diploma in Wellness and Relaxation Massage since 2018 and in 2021 delivered the NZ Diploma in Remedial Massage to distance students located throughout New Zealand for the first time.
The blended learning option offered provides learners with more choice and flexibility about how and when they study and enables much greater access nationally to these NZQA approved massage qualifications.
Both diplomas attract applications from throughout New Zealand and in particular enable those living outside of Auckland to undertake this NZQA approved and internationally recognised qualification. Students located in Auckland are also able to vary study commitments to give themselves greater flexibility about when they study and offer opportunities to maintain work related commitments while still completing academic work.
Students learn most of what they are required to know at times and in locations which best suit their needs. Students in both urban and rural locations are offered the opportunity to study from home and at times to suit their life commitments and this opens the door to studying a professional qualification in massage therapy to a whole range of people who otherwise would not be able to enrol.
Both Diplomas are one-year full time courses. Students may study part time if they wish. The blended learning course design of both qualifications comprises distance online learning modules in theory work and on campus practical block modules offered either at the College’s Auckland campus or regionally where numbers of enrolments justify this. Students meet the supervised practical requirements to register as a massage therapist with Massage New Zealand both through the block courses and for Level 6 also through approved individualised clinical work placements.
The programmes are taught by very experienced teaching staff and produce graduates who are equipped with the knowledge and skills required for effective professional clinical practice in either wellness and relaxation massage therapies or in remedial massage therapies. Graduates obtain the latest internationally recognised New Zealand registered qualification in their field and open the door to a wide range of employment opportunities.
Graduate destination data shows excellent employment outcomes for students completing both Diplomas.
Students who complete the level 6 programme may pathway to bachelor’s degrees in Massage Therapy.
In December the first cohort of students successfully completed the Master of Chinese Medicine programme. This new degree provides an excellent post graduate programme which is very important for the future of the Chinese medicine profession providing opportunities for bachelor’s graduates and current practitioners to study at master’s level and to become Chinese medicine specialists. The College seeks applicants for the next intake starting in May.
In addition, the College is also now recruiting enrolments for the February intake for the Bachelor of Health Science degree in acupuncture and Chinese medicine and for the English Language programmes.
Each programme the College has offers retraining opportunities and good employment prospects and/or pathways to further training for people who may be having to refocus on new skills and work opportunities.
The next open day is on Wednesday February 2. This offers an opportunity to find out more about the College and the qualifications offered. Due to Covid19 restrictions, please refer to the website Open Day section to check details about information you will be required to provide.
Special discounts and scholarships are offered to encourage people interested in making massage, acupuncture and Chinese medicine practise a career choice.
