Ex-cop wants answers over theft

- JAMES HALPIN

A former policeman is frustrated over what he says is police inaction after he provided them with detailed information about the man who allegedly stole his motorbike.

Arjun Brar’s motorbike was stolen the day after Waitangi Day by a man who Brar claimed came to view and test ride one he was selling. The man met him in Manukau, took the motorbike for a test ride and didn’t return, he said.

Brar, an Auckland police officer for eight-and-a-half years, recorded the incident on CCTV and then dug up more information on the man, which he provided to police. He also found others on Facebook who alleged they had motorbikes stolen by the man.

However, after he submitted the information and CCTV to police the day after the theft, Brar didn’t hear anything back for over a month. ‘‘Despite providing them with such good evidence ... [they] still didn’t do anything,’’ he said.

‘‘It is frustrating, so frustrating.’’

Brar said he knew, from being an officer, that police acted reactively, but he still expected more from them given the information he provided.

Earlier last week, Brar became aware police had a warrant out for the alleged thief’s arrest. ‘‘It’s a bit better, at least they’re doing something. It just feels like they’re doing too little, too late.’’

Police would not comment.

However, they confirmed the warrant for the man was for theft and related offences.

Brar said the alleged thief taunted and threatened him over text and Facebook following the incident, saying ‘‘I know where you work’’.

‘‘Bro I’ll give bike bk when you put 500 in my account,’’ he said in another message.

CCTV video, provided by Brar, shows Brar talking to the alleged thief, who then gets on the bike and rides off. ‘‘Alarm bells were ringing, I should have listened to them,’’ he said.

A white Audi was also at the scene. Brar said he felt if he tried to stop the man riding off, the two men in the Audi would have stepped in. The stolen bike was a 2019 Kawasaki Vulcan 650.
