Look who’s talking: broker Chris Black

- MATT BROWN

The term ‘insurance broker’ can conjure images of steel grey hair, wire rimmed glasses and sober suits but that’s far from the case. Chris Black explains why the industry is an exciting one to be part of.

What is your day-to-day life like at RMA Financial?

Every day is different which I love. A large portion of my day is spent communicating with clients and insurers. One day I can be in the office advising on claims process and settlement, placing new insurances along with assisting with any changes for existing clients. The next I’m out on the road seeing my clients.

How did you get started with your own business?

My career opportunities were limited working for an international firm without relocating out of the region. I had a desire to be self employed and have full control of my career and future.

Do you have general financial advice that anyone could pick up and use?

Use a broker or advisor no matter what financial advice you are after. The service they provide generally comes at no additional cost to the client and the advice can be invaluable particularly in our industry at claim time.

Is there a common mistake people make that they look for advice for?

Not reading the fine print of their insurance cover. Not every policy is the same and quite often we see clients purchasing solely on price and not understanding the underlining coverage they are buying. The old saying ‘‘you get what you pay for’’ often applies.

Why Marlborough? What is it that attracted you to stay in the region?

Why not Marlborough? It has a lot to offer when it comes to owning your own business and raising a young family.
