Cave Cup winning streak continues
Congratulations to the Marlborough Senior Rep team who came away from last weekend’s Central Districts tournament with the Cave Cup, the fourth year in succession they have won this trophy.
The team bounced back from the disappointment of losing to a strong Manawatu side on the first day with a fantastic win over Horowhenua-Kapiti on Saturday.
Chasing 280 to win there were stand-out performances from Prabodha Arthavidu with an unbeaten 107 and also from 17 year old Tom Sutherland who scored 80 from 111 balls opening the innings.
In the final opener Luke Frankland top scored with 68 from 78 balls as Marlborough struggled to get through to 198 batting first against top of the South rivals Nelson.
They backed this up with a superb display in the field to restrict Nelson to 183 and win by 15 runs. Matthew Stretch with 3 for 42 was the pick of the bowlers who were backed up by some brilliant fielding to cap off a successful weekend.
Marlborough’s next assignment is a home fixture against Buller on 1st and 2nd December as the Zone 3 Hawke Cup elimination programme gets underway.
In local club cricket Renwick and Wairau Valley are the two unbeaten sides remaining in the 2nd grade competition and they meet this Saturday as teams aim to reach the 16th December final.
Renwick were too good for previously unbeaten Wairau Warriors with opening bowlers Max Brydon (3-11) and Mike Anstis (3-8) in fine form, at one point reducing Wairau to 8 runs for 6 wickets after 10 overs after Renwick had betted well to make 188 from their 40 overs (Hayden Gaudin 61).
Wairau Valley’s Liam Geddes was also in fine form with 3 for 8 from 5.3 overs as Valley chased down 124 for a comfortable win.
The WK 4th grade competition was back in action after rain washed out play the previous weekend and there were some outstanding performances.
Ollie Kennedy scored 41 and took 2 for 10 in Celtic’s win over Wairau Black, while Olly Pauling smashed 62no off only 27 balls including 4 sixes as Wairau Valley chased down 173 to beat Renwick (Benji Nation 30).
Meanwhile Tim Petrie was the match winning bowler for Wairau Blue with 5 for 9 in their win over Wairau White (Finn Pickens 35).
This weekend sees Horton Park host Central Districts A who take on a combined Tasman XI over Saturday and Sunday.
This is a great opportunity for local cricket supporters to see some of the region’s top players and a great opportunity also for those players to push for higher honours.
Play starts at 10.30am each day on the main Horton Park ground.
We hope to see you there.
