South Port – helping your employment journey stay full steam ahead!
South Port, located approximately 20 minutes’ drive from Invercargill, plays a vital role in Southland’s import and export supply chains, helping customers solve logistics challenges, improve efficiency, and minimise costs.
Based on a 40ha man-made island known as Island Harbour, South Port is proud to provide a full range of marine services, cargo and container shipping, and on-site warehousing for domestic and international customers.
The Port is ideally situated to service Southland’s significant export and import industries, including aluminium, timber, fisheries, dairy, meat, wood chips, stock food, cement, alumina, fertiliser, and petroleum products.
South Port’s workforce is very diverse, and we have talented, experienced, and dedicated staff working across all areas of our business: Marine, Bulk Cargo, Container Terminal, Warehousing, Infrastructure, and Administration.
South Port is a significant employer in Bluff, with over 120 permanent full-time staff, who are ably supported by our experienced relief crew, seasonal and casual staff.

engaged workforce. We invest heavily in developing and upskilling our people, and offer ongoing personal and professional development opportunities, including extensive on-site health and safety and technical and role-specific training. This ranges from entry-level forklift training to specialist bridge simulation training overseas for our marine pilots.
As a Port company, we operate in what has traditionally been viewed as a maledominated industry. Still, we’re trying to shift that, and we now have four female operators – two in our Container Terminal operating heavy machinery and two in our Warehousing Division.
“It’s great at South Port, I love my job and the people I work with”.

Hayden is one of South Port’s “next generation."
Born and bred in Bluff, and able to work a stone’s throw from home, is a huge attraction – but so are the opportunities that have opened up since Hayden started as a fixed termer in 2015. After three seasons in our Dairy Warehousing Department, he was offered a permanent, full-time position. Not long after, Hayden then accepted a proposed transfer, from Forklift/Store Person to Logistics Administration.
Last year, he was promoted to the newly created role ‘Operations and Training Coordinator’, where he is now a crucial member of the Dairy Warehousing leadership team. Hayden works alongside Supervisor Sian Tarrant, and Operations Team Leader, Khamish McCauley, who lead the team of operators.
“South Port is a great place to start your career, and I’d definitely encourage other people to consider working at the Port”.
