Protect your household pipes

-

Council Assets & Services Contracts Engineer Yuval Barker is keen to spread the word about the impact of varying water pressure on household pipes, particularly in Picton where this can differ quite a lot due to the terrain. Picton’s water pressure can range anywhere from 300 to 1,100 kPa (kilopascals).

“Council aims to supply water at a pressure above 300 kPa which allows for sufficient pressure for firefighting as well as for an acceptable flow through your taps,” Mr Barker said.

“The general rule of thumb is that properties closer to sea level will experience pressures up to 1,100 kPa while properties at a higher elevation may function above the minimum pressure,” he said.

It is important for all households to use pipes with the correct pressure rating to match the maximum pressure which will occur in your area.

Additional protection is recommended in the form of a pressure reducing valve to your own water supply line if you constantly experience high pressure. “A pressure reducing valve ensures that your water supply will operate at a more favourable level, and it may extend the life of your pipework and fittings. It also offers some peace of mind if the history of your pipework is unknown or if you live in an older property,” said Mr Barker.

“If you are experiencing high water pressure, you should ensure that your plumbing system is appropriate for the pressure it is subjected to and that it is well maintained.”

Council recommends seeking advice from a qualified plumber to assess your specific situation.

“Make sure you ask them to work to the maximum operating pressure for your area. Remember that if you are a metered customer, you are responsible for the cost of water that passes through your meter, even if it is lost through leakage.”
