Marlborough Express - Weekend Express

Not yet normal again for tourism operators

- Tracey Green is the acting general manager of Destination Marlborough.

In the midst of this amazing weather that has graced us in Marlborough of late, the region continues to captivate both domestic and international visitors.

The allure of our backyard, with its stunning landscapes and vibrant offerings, remains a perfect reason why people are drawn to this picturesque part of New Zealand.

Reflecting on the past year, Marlborough has navigated through challenges, from ferry disruptions to the current distraction of iReX. Interestingly, while iReX disruptions may be causing ripples domestically, they hardly register with international visitors planning their oncein-a-lifetime trip to Marlborough. Their primary concerns revolve around the accessibility of their favourite wineries, secluded beaches and the availability of accommodation in their location of choice.

As Marlborough enters its second summer post-border reopening, the region is witnessing a growing interest among international visitors.

The increase in air capacity from North America and Europe contributes to the surge in international tourists heading to New Zealand, creating a positive momentum for the local tourism industry.

Additionally, the favourable exchange rate for our northern hemisphere counterparts adds another layer of appeal, especially as New Zealand contends with inflation.

While international tourism is thriving, the shift in domestic travel behaviour is noteworthy.

Despite concerns about inflation and rising costs, New Zealanders are opting not to forgo their summer holidays.

However, a trend emerges as domestic travellers seem to be more conscious of spending, leading to a slight decrease in the region’s domestic spend compared to the previous summer.

This shift in domestic spending, though slight, has not deterred tourism operators. Instead, it has spurred them to invest back into their businesses, gearing up for future seasons. The resilience of Marlborough’s tourism industry is evident as operators continue to enhance their offerings, ensuring that visitors, both domestic and international, have memorable experiences.

As we navigate through what will come of iReX, Marlborough continues to have the appeal of its natural beauty and tourism offerings. The magic weather serves as a reminder that, even in the face of challenges, Marlborough remains a destination that captures the hearts of those seeking unforgettable experiences.

With tourism operators investing in the future, the region is poised to welcome visitors with open arms, providing a haven of beauty and tranquillity amidst a bustling world.
