No parole for violent inmate

-

One of the country’s most dangerous women has been refused parole.

Kino Hoki Matete told the Parole Board she now knew her offending was cruel and cowardly. However, her pleas were not enough to secure her release.

In 2006, Matete became the only woman sentenced to preventive detention in New Zealand after a string of serious violent offences.

She was sentenced after being convicted of causing grievous bodily harm and wounding with intent to injure with a minimum non-parole period of six years.

This was extended in 2008 after she threw scalding water over another inmate at Arohata Prison, in Wellington, during a struggle for control of their wing.

She has broken a prison officer’s arm, punched another prison officer and cut the face of a woman she suspected of breaking into her flat.

The Parole Board noted Matete’s high risk of committing further violence and high score on a psychopathy checklist.

However, there had also been a improvements in her behaviour during the past two years.

Prison staff said she had become a dedicated and fastidious worker.
