Young stars prove big hits

- Clay Wilson

Jonty Zydenbos and Bright Asiamah were crowned boys champions and the duo of Jemima Pavey and Phoebe Trolove won the girls title when the Rapaura Tennis Club held their annual junior doubles tournament at the weekend.

A total of 14 pairs took part in the boys competition and top seeds Zydenbos and Asiamah were largely untroubled on their way to top honours.

After a first round bye, they had a 9-0 quarterfinal win and 9-2 semifinal victory to reach the final.

Second seeds Nick Hogg and Ollie Pavey had 9-1 and 9-0 wins to qualify for the title decider, but Zydenbos and Asiamah were too strong and sealed the title 9-1.

Five combinations contested the girls round-robin style competition and it was Pavey and Trolove who secured the title by being the only pair to win all four of their matches.

Lily Tiueti and Marcelle Scadden finished second with a 3-1 record, while Abbey Brown and Hayley Strong went 2-2 to place third.

The boys consolation plate for second round losers was claimed by Lauchlan Mackie and Liam Toneycliffe, who beat George Clarke and Maddix Brady 6-1 in the final.

First round losers played in a plate competition and Max Struthers and Kees Brady bagged the title with a 6-4 victory over Tyler Vitale and Jordan MacDonald.

Rapaura Tennis Club spokesman Barry Doig said 38 under-14 players were involved in very hot conditions and scores did not reflect the closeness of matches.

The tournament concluded with a prizegiving and presentation of trophies and he called it a ‘‘very successful day.’’
