I read with in­ter­est the cur­rent fash­ion for the Marl­bor­ough District Coun­cil to al­low waivers for pool own­ers to re­place pool fences with elec­tric clos­ing cov­ers.

We are quoted 100 per cent safety and po­ten­tially a safer out- come then us­ing fences.

A pic­ture of a pool owner stand­ing astride his new cover re­in­forces this vi­sion of a utopia of wa­ter safety.

I have to say that this vi­sion is badly flawed and breath­tak­ing in its naivety, for the the re­al­ity is that this method only works when an adult is in at­ten­dance to close the cover should it be nec­es­sary.
