HOW THE BLACK CAPS RATED IN THE ODI SERIES

- By MARK GEENTY

MARTIN GUPTILL (5 innings, 113 runs at 22.6, strike rate 57, highest score 50)

Rating: 3

Never got going against a very accurate England pace attack who frustrated him out. For his standing and seniority in white-ball cricket a disappointing contribution.

COLIN MUNRO (5 innings, 56 runs at 11.2, SR 77, HS 49)

Rating: 2

One solid innings on a difficult Wellington pitch but a letdown otherwise as his hard-charging approach didn’t come off. His spot will be under scrutiny for New Zealand’s next ODI series which isn’t until November.

KANE WILLIAMSON (4 innings, 179 runs at 59.66, SR 75, HS 112*)

Rating: 7

One shot away from winning New Zealand the third ODI on a tricky surface and got Ross Taylor going in Dunedin, but he sets high standards and it’s not the dominant series we’ve become accustomed to. ROSS TAYLOR (3 innings, 304 runs at 152, SR 105, HS 181*)

Rating: 10

A rare perfect score but, heck, why not? Sparked the game one victory in Hamilton with his 18th ODI century, and his Dunedin onslaught on one leg was out of this world. Badly missed when absent injured.

MARK CHAPMAN (3 innings, 9 runs at 3, SR 39, HS 8)

Rating: 1

Deserved his spot as the dominant domestic 50-over batsman but was too high in the order and was found wanting, particularly by England’s spinners.

TOM LATHAM (5 innings, 182 runs at 36.4, SR 88, HS 79)

Rating: 7

Under pressure going into the series but responded with two vital support roles to Taylor in Hamilton and Dunedin. One or two poor dismissals otherwise but reaffirmed his spot at five and efficient gloveman.

HENRY NICHOLLS (5 innings, 69 runs at 17.25, SR 68, HS 55)

Rating: 4

Earned late points for seeing home the Dunedin victory then an excellent 55 in a lost cause in Christchurch. Couldn’t have gone much worse than one run from his first three innings. COLIN DE GRANDHOMME (5 innings, 72 runs at 14.4, SR 96, HS 38; 22 overs, 1 wicket at 111, economy rate 5.04, best bowling 1-24)

Rating: 4

A nice cameo in Dunedin to ice victory, and a good spell in Wellington, but a disappointing series overall. Awful shots in Wellington and Christchurch ramped up the pressure when they needed him to step up with the bat.

MITCHELL SANTNER (4 innings,

216 runs at 108, SR 106, HS 67; 39.5 overs, 3 wickets at 69, ER 5.19, BB 2-54)

Rating: 9

His batting revival was the best thing to happen for New Zealand in the series, Taylor’s heroics aside. Erased doubts over his all-round quality. Was his usual reliable self with the ball. TIM SOUTHEE (42 overs, 2 wickets at 128.5, ER 6.11, BB 1-48)

Rating: 4

Tidy at times but providing very little punch with the new ball, compared with England’s quicks. Two wickets a skinny haul for his quality and will be under the microscope again in the test series.

ISH SODHI (37.4 overs, 10 wickets at 25.2, ER 6.69, BB 4-58)

Rating: 7

Leapt ahead of Todd Astle again in the spin pecking order and showed his quality as an attacking bowling option.

TRENT BOULT (44 overs, 9 wickets at 29.22, ER 5.97, BB 2-46)

Rating: 6

Good numbers again in a solid series but not the impact or economy he would have liked against England’s top-order.
