Teen caught in girl’s bedroom
When spoken to by police, the man expressed remorse for his actions.
The Marlborough man admitted a charge of indecent assault at the Blenheim District Court on Monday.
His lawyer John Holdaway said it was the man’s first criminal offence.
Police refused to grant diversion as the charge was too serious, so Holdaway would make an application for a discharge without conviction, he said.
The man was willing to meet with the girl and try to make amends through restorative justice, if the girl was willing to participate, Holdaway said.
He asked for interim name suppression to protect the identity of the girl.
Judge Tony Zohrab granted interim suppression but said he would seek the family’s opinion before granting final name suppression.
He referred the man to restorative justice and ordered a probation report, and remanded the man on bail to July 25 for sentencing.
