Waine brace nets draw for reserves

-

Two second-half goals from teenage Phoenix striker Ben Waine secured the club’s reserves team a come-from-behind draw in their derby against Team Wellington yesterday.

With the A-league side on a bye at the weekend, the 18-yearold made full use of logging minutes in the ISPS Handa Premiership, although he did also check out of the match at David Farrington Park with an apparent injury.

But before Waine left the field in the 78th minute, his contribution had sure been plenty, steering his side from 2-0 down to a meritorious 2-2 draw, which earned the Phoenix reserves their first point of the season.

In other action at the weekend, Myer Bevan continued his hot scoring form, and Auckland City their unbeaten run, by scoring twice in a 5-0 rout of Hamilton Wanderers.at John Kerkhof Park on Saturday.

The comprehensive win saw Auckland edge ahead of crosstown rivals Waitakere United, who dropped points at home by drawing 1-1 with Canterbury United at Seddon Fields.

Tasman United were kept scoreless for a third consecutive week, slumping to a lacklustre 2-0 loss to Hawke’s Bay United at Bluewater Stadium on Saturday.

After scoring twice in the first half through Ihaia Delaney and player-coach Bill Robertson, Hawke’s Bay were able to close out the match in convincing fashion.

Tasman weren’t helped when Billy Scott was given his marching orders after receiving a second yellow for dissent.

Meanwhile, defending champions Eastern Suburbs bounced back from last week’s shock loss to Hamilton by toppling Southern United 4-2 at Logan Park.
