Former All Blacks star for their French clubs
Ex-all Blacks halfback Tawerakerr Barlow starred for La Rochelle as he and former test team-mates Jerome Kaino and George Moala celebrated tries for their French clubs in the latest European Champions Cup round.
Kerr-barlow scored a try and set up two others as La Rochelle beat English club Sale 30-22 in Pool Two on Saturday.
The 29-year-old uncorked a pinpoint crosskick to Fijian midfielder Levani Botia, who set up compatriot Tevita Railevu for La Rochelle’s opening try.
Kerr-barlow dived on for his own score and, after the interval, dummied the Sale defence and put Geoffrey Doumayrou across for a crucial try. France No 8 Gregory Alldritt wrapped up the victory, and Kerr-barlow’s Kiwi halves partner Ihaia West added 10 points with his boot.
Moala, 29, underlined Clermont’s 29-13 win over Ulster in Clermont after the home side trailed 13-9 at halftime.
The former Blues back formed a powerful midfield combination with former All Black Isaia Toeava, 33, for Clermont, who now head Pool 3 after racking up 20 second half points.
Kaino, who led Toulouse to the French Top 14 title last season, crashed over from a driving maul in a 21-7 away win over Connacht in Galway.
Former Blues and Hurricanes midfielder Pita Ahki also scored for Toulouse after an Ahki v Aki duel (ex-chiefs back and Ireland international Bundee Aki was at centre for Connacht).
Toulouse clinched a quarterfinals place and Clermont are also likely to join them after establishing a three-point lead over Ulster.
La Rochelle are out of playoffs contention despite Kerr-barlow’s star action against Sale.
