he knew they were lost when he saw his own footprints on the ground.

The pair, both 23, entered the Anatori Valley to go tramping early in May. A search and rescue operation was launched on May 18 after they failed to return when expected.

Up to 50 people were involved in the search.

O’connor and Reynolds were found alive about 12.49pm on Wednesday after a search helicopter spotted smoke and saw two people waving at them.

On Saturday morning, $32,951 had been donated by 540 individuals on the Givealittle page since it was launched five days ago. O’connor said while she wouldn’t wish what the pair experienced on anyone, they had learned a lot, and she hoped to use the experience to educate others exploring in New Zealand.

‘‘I have so much gratitude for this precious life we all live and I just cannot express enough my love for you all.

‘‘I could feel the positive energy and although it was difficult, I never lost hope. It really is amazing what you can do when your life depends on it!’’

She said the message didn’t come close to repaying everyone for their support.

‘‘But please know I will be eternally grateful.’’
