Choc bar with big Lotto win

- Maia Hart maia.hart@stuff.co.nz

ASpring Creek Four Square customer is $200,000 and a bar of chocolate better off after her visit to the shop on Sunday.

The woman had called in to get her winning Lotto ticket processed, whispering to the shop assistant that she thought she had a ‘‘big ticket’’.

Spring Creek Four Square coowner Tommy Glubb wasn’t working on Sunday but got the full rundown from staff.

The customer had bought the ticket at the Spring Creek supermarket, about six kilometres north of Blenheim, earlier in the week, he said. The $200,000 Lotto Strike was the supermarket’s biggest win in their six years as a Lotto outlet.

‘‘Apparently there was a smile from ear to ear. They knew they had won big.

‘‘It was actually pretty classic. She walked in, got a chocolate bar, had a bit of a look around, and then perhaps waited for there not to be too many people in store. ‘‘Then they went up to the staff and whispered . . . ‘I think I’ve got the big ticket’.

‘‘The staff were obviously superexcited when the customer came in.’’

Sure enough, after checking, the woman was $200,000 better off than the day before.

‘‘It’s all a bit surreal to think that somebody bought a ticket in here and then at 8 o’clock at night, from something they did in our store to be that much better off was super-cool,’’ Glubb said. ‘‘We’ve always thought we are a pretty special place, so to get a good win like that was pretty incredible.’’

The winner told the staff member she was going to use it to ‘‘get ahead in life’’.

Glubb said their biggest win before the weekend was about six months ago when someone won $30,000. ‘‘It’s another service to the community.

‘‘Our main side of the business is grocery, but without us providing Lotto then people would have to go

into town for it,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s nice to have really.’’

Saturday’s draw also saw a player in Hamilton take home $16.5 million from Lotto’s Powerball First Division.

The player won both the $16m Powerball and shared the Lotto First Division win.

The winning ticket was sold through the online Lotto platform, Mylotto.

The winner told Lotto he couldn’t believe his luck and planned on using the money to secure his family’s future.

It was the second-highest Powerball payout in 2021.
