Hinuera host final open tournament

- HINUERA BOWLS CLUB

For the Hinuera Bowling Club it’s that time of the year where the club has completed its programme.

Focus is now about Champion of Champion centre events.

The club hosted its final open tournament of the season a fortnight ago.

An optional triples event sponsored by COMAG, attracted 14 teams with a great turn out from the host club providing six teams.

At the end of play there were two teams finishing on four wins.

It was the Jim Savage team from Tokoroa which won on a count back of ends with Neil Clark’s triple from Hillcrest taking the runner up prize.

Half of the Champion of Champion events have been completed and it has been a mixed bag for the Hinuera Club.

In the Mens Singles Stu Settle made it through to the final where he met Jim Savage from Tokoroa.

Stu was always in control of the game whereas his opponent struggled to find his line and weight. Stu won the event 21-6. In the womens singles Bev Corbett made it through to the semi final where she was beaten by Faye Bird of Cambridge Central.

Both the men and women pairs made it into the final and both were playing teams from Rewa.

Stu Settle and Bruce Milne got off to a bad start dropping a three on the first end, but battled back to be leading 12-11 after 14 of the 18 ends.

In the end they won comfortably 19-12.

The win gave Stu his 27th Centre Title and Bruce his 24th Centre Title. In the womens pairs, Bev Corbett and Debbie White had a horrible start dropping a five then a two in the first two ends.

Like the men, the girls fought back hard and picked up a maximum six on the 11th end to take the lead 14-13.

Unfortunately Bev and Debbie were unable to hold on and went down 17-21.

The womens triples with Bev Corbett, Debbie White and Jocelyn Holten made a first round exit being beaten by Putaruru.

However the mens triples with Stu Settle, Bruce Milne and Kevin Smith made it through to the final and unfortunately they met a Frankton Railway team that were just a little too good.

Finally in the womens fours it was Bev, Debbie, Jocelyn and Fay Settle making it through to another final but going down to a Tokoroa quartet skipped by Carol Cox.
