Carnival and Christmas come early at Bedford

- REXINE HAWES

Every two years a committed group of volunteers work hard to bring a carnival atmosphere and Christmas together for the people of Matamata.

For many years the biennial Christmas at the Park has been spearheaded by Daryl Anderson.

Now he has passed the torch on to Iuta and Sheree Vaimoso and Chantelle McQueen, supported by the churches of Matamata.

Iuta has a passion for growing community events and celebrating Matamata and all it means.

‘‘I just want more cool stuff to happen in our town.

‘‘We have got a really cool town and we just need to start celebrating it a bit more and celebrating together.’’

He says Christmas at the Park does just that.

‘‘It’s a place where we can drum up community spirit and get everyone involved.

‘‘For me it’s having family friendly events in Matamata that everyone can turn up and you just get to see your neighbour.’’

He says first and foremost the event is for the community put on by the churches.

There will be a short message included about the meaning of Christmas, but mainly it’s all about celebrating the festive season in a really fun way.

He says this time there are more carnival rides and vendors than ever before, available from 4.30pm.

From 7pm, the on-stage entertainment will begin, which includes live music from Late 80s Mercedes, Brian Rawiri and the Matamata Brass Band as well as performances by Aspire Dance Academy and primary schools.

‘‘It’s so cool to have Late 80s Mercedes on board this year.

quality to the event that is centred around community enjoyment,’’ said Iuta.

The evening will conclude around 9.30pm with a spectacular fireworks extravaganza.

‘‘Please consider your pets and larger animals on this evening too, the fireworks can be quite loud,’’ he said.

Entry will still be available off Rata St and Bedford Park entrance, but the carpark will be reserved for disability ticket holders only.
