Thames in the summertime
The historic town of Thames (Hauraki), near the mouth of the Waihou River, is the southernmost point of beachy Coromandel. Built in the 1860s, during the gold rush, Thames’ rich history is worth investigating – a visit to the local museum and The School of Mines are must-dos here. Summer is the perfect time to go, if only to hike or cycle the Coromandel Ranges which rise steeply behind the town. A wide range of accommodation, restaurants and activities make it easy to while away a long weekend in this sunny town, or even a week.
