This wine jar was made by the Titirangi potter Jova Rancich in the 1930s for Simun Ujdur, owner of the Birdwood Winery Estate in West Auckland. Ujdur was a pioneering viticulturist who arrived in New Zealand in 1895 from Croatia and initially worked as a gum digger and photographer before moving to West Auckland to join the large Croatian community there.

The Birdwood Winery Estate, established in 1912, was one of many successful vineyards in West Auckland, most of which were owned and run by Croatian families.
