WE ARE ALL ONE

I am writing from the UK, and

I feel extremely awed by New Zealand’s reaction to the attacks in Christchurch. As a British Muslim, witnessing the displays of solidarity, affection, empathy, and sorrow from the Kiwis has been an awe-inspiring and refreshing experience; it’s really humanity at its best. With the rise of the far-right and the development of anti-immigrant narratives around the world, seeing the images of vigils, National Scarf Days and countless ‘We are one’ posters helps restore my faith in humanity. The leader of my Muslim community, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, publicly commended the New Zealand reaction to millions of Muslims in his (televised) Live Friday Sermon – this reaction cannot and should not be forgotten by Muslims. A PERFECT FIT

Just like Goldilocks, I have found the right fit for me! Not too big, stuffy or highbrow (like an insert from my husband’s financial material); not too small, filled with sensationalised fluff stories; and not so boring that I fall asleep between knitting two and pearling one. My beautiful sister-inlaw, Kathy had the foresight to match me with a MiNDFOOD subscription for Christmas and I just could not be happier. I feel like I’ve finally come home. Not too big and not too small. The content is just right, with its interesting and educational articles, intellect and social awareness. This magazine is a stimulating and thought-provoking feast for the senses, and it lasts far longer than a cursory flick through. I enjoy picking up each magazine time and time again and learning something new every time. Don’t change a thing – because I don’t want to leave ‘home’ again. Gillian

EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE MAG

I always feel like I’ve struck it lucky when my local library has the most recent issue of MiNDFOOD sitting on the shelf to borrow (it pays to hit

the library at the beginning of the month). Instead of taking days to get through an issue, today I am putting my feet up and reading as much as I wish with no guilt that I should be doing something else. Georgie

READ WITH A VIEW

As I look out at this view, I can’t help but think how lucky I am to be born in Aoteoroa, and to be able to take a little holiday with my favourite treat. No phones, TV, computers or crowds – just silence and the endless joy of good journalism. Gabby

A TALE OF LOVE

Responding to Jane’s letter in the April issue regarding ‘A Life Torn Apart By Drugs’ (March 2019) – I see no arrogance in the article, only heartache. There are no rule books or guidelines available in such painful human matters – and thank goodness for that. We are not pre-programmed robots. There is no right or wrong way to be or to act in these situations. Those who love an addict live in the dreadful cycle of waning hope and helplessness, as they watch their loved one deteriorate, and each person handles it differently. I admire that ‘Angus’ cared enough for his brother to search for him and to see if he could bring him back home, and I am grateful he shared his story with us. Monika

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US

Happy 11th Birthday! I love the story section of MINDFOOD and I think it’s wonderful that the magazine encourages and showcases budding writers like myself. I started reading MiNDFOOD last year, and I have been very impressed by the diversity of articles and the range of content. It’s heartening to see a magazine that is both deliciously enjoyable to read with a cup of coffee, while also tackling some of the more sensitive subjects that touch people and places today. For my recent birthday, my husband treated me to a MiNDFOOD subscription, so I can look forward to my magazines arriving in the post from now on. I thanked my husband by making the spiced meatballs from your March issue, and while they were absolutely delicious, my presentation was somewhat lacking! I’m still new to the whole culinary goddess thing (Nigella is safe for now) but MiNDFOOD is helping! Zoe
