BAR HOPPING WITH THE BEST

Westward Whiskey Advocate, Jordan Felix, loves his job. And why wouldn’t he? He gets to drink good whiskey, talk about whiskey and encourage other people to drink whiskey with him. This affable Aussie/American has spent the past eight years in Portland – plenty long enough for him to suss out the city’s top six bars:

• Clyde Common. Home to the American Bartender of the Year, Jeffrey Morgenthaler, this bar has won a slew of national awards and boasts an impressive international drinks list, including 100+ whiskeys. 1014 SW Harvey Milk St 97205.

• The Driftwood Room. This Portland landmark is celebrating its 65th birthday this year. Known for its classic cocktails, all the drink ingredients are locally sourced. 729 SW 15th Ave 97205.

• The Hoxton. This hip hotel on the edge of Chinatown offers two for the price of one. Rooftop bar Tope specialises in Mexican spirits such as mescal, tequila and sotol to wash down the spicy dishes served from the taqueria. Down in the basement, you’ll find a late-night, insiders’ only bar (2NW5) where whiskey is the specialty, and if you get peckish, cute little boxes of Chinese/American food are the go. 15 NW 4th Ave 97209.

• Rum Club. Mixing some of the best tropical cocktails in town, this bar’s popularity with the city’s bartenders is testament to its quality. 720 SE Sandy Boulevard 97214.

• Scotch Lodge. Only opened this year, this whiskey-lovers’ establishment tailors its cocktails to your individual taste. 215 SE 9th Ave Ste 102, 97214.

• Multnomah Whiskey Library. Boasting more than 1,800 spirits, this club is best visited earlier in the week when non-members are more easily admitted. Unique cart service provides cocktails made right in front of you. 1124 SW Alder St, 97205.

• Honorable Mention: Bible Club. This cosy (read: small) bar has a speakeasy feel, with all the furnishings and music dating from pre-1930s America. There’s no sign but if the green light is on upstairs, they’re open for business. 6716 SE 16th Ave 97202.
