SMART THINKING

Twenty-seven years after it was founded, the award-winning and unifying Pasifika Festival is set to make a welcome comeback at Western Springs in Auckland this year.

The unifying Pasifika Festival will make a welcome return to Auckland this year.

After a last-minute cancellation in 2019, Pasifika will enliven Auckland once again with its much-anticipated revival this year. Its return will see exciting additions to the cultural event, including a new festival stage accommodating a large audience to showcase Pacific talent. The stage will feature artists such as Sammy J and Aaradhna, as well as up-and-coming new performers. A Pasifika Strongman event will also be held for the first time.

Pasifika features 11 villages representing various Pacific cultures, allowing festival-goers to learn about each of them through dance, song and local cuisine. One of the main purposes for establishing the event 27 years ago was the celebration of the Pacific peoples of Tāmaki Makaurau, and this remains at the heart of Pasifika today.

The two-day event was cancelled last year due to police resources being stretched following the Christchurch terror attacks. Reflecting on the tragedy that led to the cancellation, Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development Events Production Manager Leisa Siteine says Pasifika is a worthwhile way to bring different ethnic and cultural groups together. “You only have to see the crowds and the obvious pride among the performers to see the event’s value,” she says. “It is an opportunity for all of us to celebrate being part of a true Pacific melting pot.

“They are all different but have the common Pacific link which they celebrate at this one festival,” she explains. “Whether it be attending the festival together, performing with your family or working in the family stall together – it really is a family day out.” • Pasifika Festival, Western Springs Park, 14-15 March 2020 aucklandnz.com/pasifika-festival
