ECO AWARE

-

There are many little things we can all do in our kitchens to help in the fight against plastic pollution. Here are some easy changes you can make that will have a beneficial flow-on effect:

SWAP THOSE SPONGES – ditch conventional sponges, which are often made from plastics and may contain dyes and antibacterial properties that pollute waterways. Look in your local eco-friendly store for kitchen loofahs that are effective and totally biodegradable, or just use an organic cotton cloth. They can be refreshed in the dishwasher, and are also biodegradable.

THE LAST STRAW – enjoy a refreshing drink or classy cocktail but forget about the plastic straws. They are major pollutants and cause havoc with marine and bird life. Recyclable stainless steel straws look sophisticated, are available in bent and straight versions and usually come with a handy cleaning brush as well as being dishwasher proof.

NO MORE LEFTOVERS – if the main thing that’s left over after storing leftovers from your dinner is cling wrap, just take a hint from our grandmothers. Place food in a bowl with a plate covering the top and the problem is sorted.

TEA TIME – your early morning cuppa has an environmental impact because tea bags have non-recyclable components. If you don’t have time to make a pot with loose leaf tea, buy a stainless steel infuser. It’ll make a better tasting cuppa, too.
