What’s it about?
This NYT podcast breaks down the biggest news story of the day by interviewing the paper’s reporter covering the issue.
What did you like about it?
I’m obsessed with this podcast! It’s my favourite way to start the day. Each episode analyses a news story and explains the context of it in a way that everyone can understand. I find that when an episode covers an issue I wouldn’t think I’d be interested in, it often ends up being one of the most captivating stories.
Three ways to describe it: Fascinating, educational and addictive.
Lillian SHAMELESS by Zara McDonald & Michelle Andrews
What’s it about?
It’s hard to beat its own tagline – “The podcast for smart women who love dumb stuff”.
What did you like about it?
It’s a podcast removing the guilt from your guilty pleasure. Melbourne journalists Zara McDonald and Michelle Andrews discuss the biggest pop culture stories of the week and consider their significance in the wider social context. With its episodes released on a Monday, it’s something lighthearted to look forward to at the start of the week.
Three ways to describe it: Funny, frank, and a conversation starter.
Kathryn HEAVYWEIGHT by Gimlet
What’s it about?
In each episode, host Jonathan Goldstein helps someone resolve something from their past that has been weighing on them.
What did you like about it?
It’s funny, irreverent and surprisingly very moving. You never know where each episode is headed and the journey is so enjoyable. One of my favourite episodes is one where two old men mend their friendship, ending with a touching poem one wrote for the other.
Three ways to describe it: Story-driven, quirky and unexpectedly touching.
